Cyber Advisory: Increasing Risk to MSPs

On May 11, 2022, cyber authorities in several nations including the United States, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, and New Zealand released a joint advisory warning of increasing cyber risks to Managed Service Providers and, via proxy, their clients.

These nations are"aware of recent reports that observe an increase in malicious cyber activity targeting managed service providers (MSPs) and expect this trend to continue." Since MSPs have access to the networks for numerous clients, a breach within the MSP can open the door for many other breaches.

The bulletin clarifies the danger and "defines MSPs as entities that deliver, operate, or manage ICT services and functions for their customers via a contractual arrangement, such as a service level agreement."

The cyber advisory specifically points out that foreign nation states are increasing their attacks against MSPs in order to cause cascading negative consequences.

Typical MSPs are not cyber experts. Although a small part of what many MSPs do relates to cybersecurity, their focus is on the day to day IT functions of their clients. However, Tuearis Cyber focuses only on cybersecurity and following the latest threat intelligence to stay aware of the types and methodologies of attacks in the wild. This type of expertise requires constant vigilance and cyber focus.
